Description
Calabria and the liquorice
Calabrian liquorice: good, sweet, healthy and with an unmistakable taste. In Calabria, you will find the best liquorice in the world.
The liquorice plant grows and develops in the longitudinal range that goes from Spain to China.
A quarter of the world demand (about 10 thousand tons per year) is produced in Italy and 80% of the national demand is produced in Calabria.
The climate, the soil and the altitude made this land a perfect habitat for its cultivation and growth.
In this long and narrow peninsula, surrounded by the sea for about 800km and divided into two parts by the Apennine mountain ranges, grows a variety of liquorice that is considered the best. This is because of its particular taste, less bitter than the others, but also for its chemical-physical properties.
The liquorice
Known for its particularly refreshing, aphrodisiac, and anti-inflammatory properties, liquorice is a spontaneous plant whose roots and stolons are used.
It is good for the respiratory system, digestive activity and for liver disorders. Always used in folk medicine, it is also useful to combat water retention and food poisoning.
