Caring for the environment and adopting a mulberry tree is not only an original idea, it’s a choice for an ethical, sustainable, and supportive world.
Let’s just think for a moment about making silk. Don’t you think it’s a miracle of nature?
Silkworms feed mainly on mulberry leaves. They are so greedy for it that they can feed themselves ´non-stop on impressive amounts.
The silk thread is made thanks to two glands in its tiny body.
What we call silk is in fact the result of a chemical synthesis of the proteins produced.
The saliva of the caterpillar gels in contact with the air and 8 shaped movements with its head create various layers from which the raw silk cocoon is made.
It takes 3-4 days for the caterpillar to prepare the cocoon, made of a single continuous thread (the length varies between 300 and 900 meters).
At the end of this incredible weaving work, it pupates and eventually turns into a butterfly.
Without mulberry trees, silk could not be produced. Its leaves are the essential element of the caterpillars’ diet.
The mulberry tree is a very long-lived tree that can reach important dimensions and produces delicious fruits.
SILK IN CALABRIA
The art of silk experienced periods of great splendor in Calabria.
In Catanzaro, the cultivation of mulberry trees, the breeding of silkworms and the weaving of precious yarns were extremely widespread in ancient times.
Thanks to the passion and commitment of three young Calabrians, this wonderful old tradition has been brought back to life in recent years.
Miriam has a great love for nature, Giovanna for art and Domenico grew up raising silkworms.
Together they decided to use the resources of their land and to revive the old production chain of mulberry and silk cultivation.
Your daily work contributes to the growth of the territory and its sustainable development, while protecting the environment and the landscape.
Here in the heart of Magna Graecia we still find unspoilt places where nature reigns supreme.
1.5 hectares of land belong to the breeding of silkworms, along with relics of silk history and ancient looms.
