Description

GROTTOLE, BASILICATA

BasilicataBasilicata is one of the most authentic regions in Italy. Located in the heart of the Lucanian Apennines and surrounded by both the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian Sea, Basilicata offers a wide variety of historical and naturalistic attractions.

Grottole is located near Matera, the capital. The name Grottole is derived from the Latin word “criptula” and indicates the ancient origins of this place, in small caves in prehistoric times.

These caves still exist today and have been converted into workshops for the manufacture of clay pots that characterize local artisanal production.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the village of Grottole was also an important Norman rule.
