Description
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world. Here, history, culture and nature come together and create fascinating scenarios. The intertwining of caves and winding alleys, gardens and underground tunnels make Matera a unique architectural landscape.
Carved in the tuff, it is a remarkable city. It is famous for the “Sassi” (stone houses), the numerous rock churches, the natural areas, the peasant traditions and the landscapes of incomparable beauty.
Visiting Matera is like taking a trip back in time to a large open-air museum where the signs of a bygone era are still clearly visible.
This city is a beautiful testimony of how men have been able to adapt very well to this incredible territory without destroying it.
The labyrinth of narrow streets, caves and cave churches dates back to 9,000 years ago.
Matera and its Sassi have been named Unesco Heritage. The city was elected European Capital of Culture in 2019 and is the setting for our anyways.experience dedicated to an ancient artisan tradition.
ANYWAYS.EXPERIENCE: FABRIC DECORATION IN MATERA
During this tour dedicated to the sense of touch, you will have the opportunity to experience the ancient tradition of spinning fabrics and decorating them.
The experience takes place in the heart of Matera, in the historic center, immersed in the famous Sassi.
You will be introduced to the various spinning and decoration techniques of the fabric, the history of the home weaving of household textiles and the cultivation of hemp for yarn in Italy.
In the meantime, you will see an artisan at work while decorating and embroidering the fabric.
Our craftswomen use an ancient hand printing technique with handcrafted stamps carved in wood.
The printed product is absolutely unique. The natural rust colour is a fascinating alchemy made with wine vinegar, flour and rusty irons.
Matera’s beauties are represented on household linen made of quality natural fabrics, combined with artisan and eco-sustainable prints.
Enjoy Matera and discover ancient traditions with our “Fabric Decoration in Matera” tour.
A small tasting of local products completes the offer.
