Description
GROTTOLE, BASILICATA
Basilicata is one of the most authentic regions in Italy. Located in the heart of the Lucanian Apennines and surrounded by both the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian Sea, Basilicata offers a wide variety of historical and naturalistic attractions.
Grottole is located near Matera, the capital. The name Grottole is derived from the Latin word “criptula” and indicates the ancient origins of this place, in small caves in prehistoric times.
These caves still exist today and have been converted into workshops for the manufacture of clay pots that characterize local artisanal production.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the village of Grottole was also an important Norman rule.
ANYWAYS EXPERIENCE: OLIVE OIL IN GROTTOLE, BASILICATA
The village of Grottole is surrounded by lush nature that alternates between nature reserves, forests, waterways and the inevitable centuries-old olive groves.
And it is in one of these old olive groves that you meet Giuseppe and his children Martina and Vincenzo.
For over forty years they have been keeping the extra virgin olive oil tradition learned from their grandparents. Hard work but above all a lot of passion.
This tour is dedicated to the tastes and flavors from Italy.
We will meet in Grottole in the historic center where we will leave for the family olive grove. After a regenerating walk among these magnificent trees and their magical shapes, Giuseppe will show you the main characteristics of the plants and you will learn the cycle of organic oil production in a traditional oil mill, a stone mill with hydraulic presses.
Finally, the experience ends with a tasting of the typical “Fedda“, toasted bread with extra virgin olive oil and salt, a real happy ending.
Get to know Basilicata, discover the beautiful village of Grottole and taste the local organic oil!
