    Description

    NURAGHI: THE PYRAMIDS OF SARDINIA

    nuraghi sardegna

Would you have ever thought that there are more than 7000 nuraghi in Sardinia today?
Although they were an important part of the millennia-old Sardinian civilization, the nuraghi were neglected and little known for a long time. In fact, they are unique in their kind.

Nur means pile of stones. The nuraghi are actually cone-shaped stone structures. The walls are up to 4 meters wide and can reach a height of over 20 meters.

Its function is not yet clear. Were they military, defense or watchtowers? Or did they have votive and religious functions? Or maybe astronomical observatories?
It is very likely that they had different functions depending on their position and environmental context.

The Nuraxi of Barumini is among the best preserved nuraghi. In December 1997 it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Naples.
