BECOME A HAPPY FOOL IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!
This only happens in Gubbio! The medieval town is full of history and art, and has its very own tradition: take a test to become “officially mad”!
In Umbria, in the heart of Italy, you learn about a craft’s history in the historical center and get to know Largo del Bargello that is near the Fontana dei Matti (Fountain of Madmen).
Become an honorary citizen of the city through a playful ritual.
You will be given a parchment license with the date and your name on it, written with a specific brush according to the medieval style.
The license is valid only if a citizen of Gubbio requests it for the candidate, paying a contribution to the Maggion Eugubino association.
If you pass the “test”, you will be handed over the scroll officially stating that you are “mad” and that you are now citizen of Gubbio.
If you then want to become the King or the Queen of “Madmen”, you can wear our crowns and have yourself photographed with the license in your hand.
Together with the parchment you will receive a gypsum reproduction of a small Renaissance cornucopia, a symbol of luck, prosperity and abundance.
A toast to future happiness with a local wine accompanied by cheeses and typical cold cuts completes the offer.
