Description
Laterza, a beautiful village in the province of Taranto, a few kilometers from Matera, has always been a center for producing pottery. This is evidenced by numerous finds from the time of Magna Graecia, Roman times and the Middle Ages.
Laterza is famous for its traditional baked bread, for grilled meat from the “Fornello” and for majolica. From the Middle Ages, the ceramic activity developed stronger and started to differ from the older productions. The main features are the white glaze (“smalto stannifero”), which is coated with gloss varnish and the elegant chromatic layout, predominantly turquoise on white enamel.
The craftsmanship characterizes an area and tells its story through the manufactured products. That’s why this experience dedicated to the sense of touch wants to bring this world closer and thereby also the tradition and the history of the village.
