Description
THE PAPER OF LAKE GARDA
On the shores of Lake Garda, capers, lemons, olive trees, and oleanders flourish thanks to the area’s mild and warm climate.
Because of these Mediterranean temperatures, paper was crafted for centuries in the valley of the Toscolano River. The climate allowed for year-round drying—a key advantage for this craft.
Back then, Venice was still the Serenissima, the European book capital filled with publishers, workshops, and printing presses.
The Doges sourced their paper from the Toscolano Valley, which was soon called the “Valley of the Paper Mills” with about fifty mills operating between the late 1300s and early 1400s. Even today, over 600 years later, traditional paper production continues in Toscolano Maderno, a small town on the lake’s western shore between Salò and Riva del Garda.
