VENICE SHOULDN’T EXIST. AND YET, HERE IT IS

Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Square, the canals intertwining like veins of water. But how does an entire city manage to stay afloat on water for over a thousand years?
The answer to this question lies beneath the feet of the tourists who visit every year: millions of wooden piles driven into the mud of the lagoon.
But how wood? In water?
Oaks, larches, elms.
Whole trunks, planted in the muddy ground, side by side, like a huge submerged forest. The wood, instead of rotting, becomes stone. Isn’t that magic?
The water protects it, mineralizes it, makes it indestructible.

In the lagoon, oxygen is scarce, and the microorganisms that would normally decompose the wood cannot survive.
Over the centuries, the brackish water has even mineralized these piles, making them as hard as stone. On top of this submerged forest, the Venetians laid platforms of Istrian stone, resistant to the salt’s corrosion, creating the foundation upon which their magnificent palaces rise.
Next time you admire Piazza San Marco or get lost in the narrow, charming alleys, think about it: under each step, there’s a work of extraordinary engineering, a hidden miracle of history.
Venice is not just a city: it’s a dream built on water… and suspended in time.
AND MORE…
The mystery of its foundations is just the beginning. Venice is a city made of secrets, and every street, every stone, and every wave hides a story.
Like the gondola, for instance: the undisputed symbol of the city, elegant and silent.
But did you know its asymmetrical shape helps balance the gondolier’s weight? Or that every detail – from the prow iron to the six “teeth” – tells a story of the history and geography of the Serenissima?

But Venice is just the beginning. Behind its streets and canals lies a world to discover: Veneto, a region of history, flavors, and breathtaking landscapes.
After exploring the submerged secrets of the Serenissima, the journey continues through frescoed villas, medieval villages, hills woven with vineyards, and ancient crafts that welcome you just a stone’s throw from the lagoon.
With our tours in Veneto, we take you beyond Venice, into artisan workshops, hidden cellars, and traditions that are still alive in small towns and the countryside.
Whether it’s an orecchiette workshop, a Donnafugata wine tasting, or a visit to a bergamot production site – each experience is a journey into the true soul of Italy.
